Audrey has been to her pediatrician three times, and went to a dermatologist yesterday because she has developed a severe rash on her face. It started when she was 2 1/2 weeks old and first appeared as a case of baby acne. It then dried up and turned into cradle cap or infant dandruff. Her pediatrician wasn't too alarmed because both of these conditions are normal among babies of this age, but when she didn't respond to treatment and her rash continued to worsen, she was referred to a specialist.
She went to the dermatologist yesterday at Children's Hospital and doctors think that there is probably a combination of things going on, most likely cradle cap that has been infected by a fungus. It could be the same fungus that caused her thrush, yeast that she contracted when she was born, or another fungus. They took a sample of her skin and will do a biopsy to find out exactly what's going on. We're going back for an appointment on Thursday for the results and a follow up.
In the meantime, we are treating her at home with an anti-fungal cream, a special shampoo, and twice-daily warm compresses and removal of the scales on her skin. The doctors assured us that they see this type of skin problem among babies quite often and are confident that we'll be seeing results in the next 1-2 weeks. They also said that infant skin problems tend to peak at around 4-6 weeks of age.
Although her parents' spirits have been shaken up quite a bit by all of this, Audrey doesn't seem to be bothered at all and she continues to be a vivacious, happy, healthy, and beautiful baby girl. We'll keep you posted on her progress!!!
